On culture
Company culture is constantly changing, but we want to make sure we thoughtfully and purposefully steer it as it changes. When hiring, we think of "culture add" rather than "culture fit."

🥇 The first measure of success of Rive is that it should be a great company to work at. Before revenue and profits. It should be a place where our team feels that their contributions add value to the company and to their own personal success.

Values
- Always do what is morally and ethically correct.
- We’re a US company but a global team! Make decisions that are fair globally (e.g., compensation philosophy, benefits, company perks).
- We are an inclusive team that values the diverse viewpoints and perspectives of our team members.
- Design and dev are equally important! They are twin competencies and are valued equally in decision-making and strategy.
- We care about design and experience deeply. We may have to redo things multiple times to get it right, and we are ok with that.
- On hiring: if there is a doubt, there is no doubt.
- We value learning and curiosity over placing blame or being right.
- We encourage candor and candid feedback. When we critique, we are critiquing the project, idea, or concept, not the person.
- We are open to ideas from others. Everyone should feel free to suggest ideas. Similarly, the entire team should be able to communicate with each other. No going up the chain, no silos. “Communication structure should not mirror org structure.”
- “Excellence, quality, and good should be earned words, attributed by others to us, not proclaimed by us about ourselves.” Ed Catmull, Pixar
- Failure isn’t evil, it is necessary to create something new.
- Share the bad as well as the good. Sharing problems is an act of inclusion that makes us all feel invested in the larger mission.
- We primarily communicate over Slack and try to keep all communication (other than private matters) in our group Slack threads, rather than in DMs.
- We are an async global team and have no set rules on Slack active status requirements. We are in charge of our own schedules and don’t need to reply at all hours, but we are free to post whenever we want! Remote workers and parents with kids sometimes are only available at crazy hours and we don’t want to enforce quiet/no-ping hours.
